Founded in 1811, UoO is Norway’s oldest and largest public institution of research and higher education with 27 000 students and 7000 employees. UoO offers world-class research and learning experience through its eight faculties at the University, in addition there are the Viking ships museum, the Historical museum, the Natural history museum and the Main library, with 3.6 million items. UoO focuses on research-based education and attracts highly qualified students from all over the country. As of 2012, 13% of the student population is from foreign countries. 17.5% of the academic staff and 26% of the PhD candidates are from abroad. UoO is ranked among the 100 top universities in the world. The University of Oslo has several National Centres of Excellence (CoEs), and is an active player in European research activities, with more than 100 projects funded so far in EUs 7th Framework Programme. Five Nobel Prize winners indicate the quality of the research at the University. The Department of Informatics (IFI) was established in 1977 when a division of the Mathematics Department merged with a division of the Department of Physics. IFI was a pioneer offering the very first lectures within computer science in Norway. The department has a wide range of courses and study programmes, with 800 undergraduates, 450 master’s students and 220 PhD students. IFI has a research environment with 13 research groups and around 250 research staff, producing around 350 publications annually.
